So Why Aren't You Successful?

During the last 5 years in speaking in front of thousands of individuals, I have always asked this question: "How many of you wish to be failures?" Surprisingly enough, no hands are raised. Then I have asked: "How many of you wish to be successful?" All hands are raised high. So, if success is something that everyone wants, then why isn't there more success?

Pretty simple question isn't it?

I believe that the answer is that most people fear success more than they fear failure. For them, the fear of failure is where they are currently living. This Island of Fear is full of other individuals just like them who also share a fear of success. Everyone talks about being more successful, but very few are.

To achieve success means that you must cross the sea of "What Ifs". The "What Ifs" are the possibilities of achieving success.

* What if I get all those sales orders?
* What if they really like me?
* What if….?

Just below the sea of "What Ifs" is the "Weasel Words Reef". This obstacle actually begins on the Island of Fear, but physically materializes in the sea of "What Ifs". The "Weasel Words Reef" are those words that keep you from moving forward such as:

* Would of
* Could of
* Should of
* Maybe
* Think
* Might
* Try

These sharp Weasel Words tear at your ship and have you paddling furiously back to the Island of Fear where you are safe and sound and surrounded by others who are all sharing this misery of failure.

Think about some time in the past when you truly wanted success. Did you have someone pulling you back? Remember in elementary school when you wanted to raise your hand to answer that question. Did you? Or did you keep your hand down because you did not want your friends to make fun of you? You were truly more fearful of success than failure.

Success is a great feeling. If you truly want to be successful, then chart a course of action to sail the Sea of What Ifs, reinforce your bow to thwart the Weasel Words Reef and cast off the ropes of self-doubt that tie you to those you left behind.
